Pausing moderation

How to step back from community moderation without losing your trust — pause it entirely, snooze it for a while, and resume any time.

Applies toEveryone

Once your moderation trust crosses the Community Moderator line, InkMap starts handing you posts to review. That's earned, but it isn't compulsory — if you need a break, you can pause moderation. While paused you won't be assigned any new reviews and you won't get the related nudges. Your trust score, your badges, and everything you've earned stay exactly as they are. Resume is one tap, any time, with no cooldown and no penalty.

This article is for community moderators and senior moderators. Moderation Admins and platform admins can't pause — they're the platform's last line of defence — so the control doesn't appear for them.

  • Where to find it

The pause control lives at the top of your Moderation Tab (open your Community Standing tab, then the Moderation Tab — the same place your review queue shows up). When you're active it reads "Moderate community content" with a Pause button. That's deliberate: the place where review work shows up is the place you go to turn it off.

  • Pause or snooze

Tapping Pause gives you four choices:

    • Snooze for 1 week
    • Snooze for 1 month
    • Snooze for 3 months
    • Pause until I turn it back on (no end date)

A snooze ends on its own — when the time is up you're automatically back on the roster, no action needed. Pause until I turn it back on stays off until you choose to resume. Either way, the effect is the same while it's active: no new assignments, no moderation nudges.

We don't ask you why you're pausing — it's a single tap, no questionnaire.

  • What happens the moment you pause

    • You stop being assigned new posts — reports and collection-post reviews both skip you.
    • Any reviews already on your plate are handed off right away. You don't have to clear them first, and they won't sit waiting on you. They go straight back into the pool for another moderator, so your queue empties immediately.
    • No trust penalty, ever. Pausing isn't a strike. Your moderation trust is untouched, and there's no "moderator timed out" hit for the reviews that were reassigned.
    • It's private. Nobody else can see that you've paused. Your earned standing still shows normally.
  • Coming back

Resuming is instant. Open the Moderation Tab and tap Resume (or just wait for a snooze to expire). New review work starts flowing to you again on the next round. There's no waiting period and nothing to re-earn.

If you choose Pause until I turn it back on and stay paused for a while, we'll send you one gentle in-app reminder after about a month letting you know the community could use your help — with a one-tap way back. It's easy to ignore, and it only repeats every few months while you're still paused. Snoozes don't get this reminder, since they come back on their own.

  • Pausing and notifications

Because paused moderators aren't assigned anything, the moderation nudges stop on their own — there's nothing to notify you about. This is separate from the moderation push settings described in How moderators get notified; pausing simply removes the work, so the pings have nothing to announce.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my moderation trust or my Community Moderator status if I pause?

No. Pausing changes nothing about your score, your tier, or your badges. It only stops new work from being routed to you. Everything you earned is still yours when you come back.

What happens to posts already assigned to me when I pause?

They're immediately reassigned to other moderators. You don't need to finish them, and you won't be penalised for them.

Can other people see that I've paused?

No. It's a private setting. Your public standing looks exactly the same as before.

I snoozed for a month. Do I have to remember to turn it back on?

No. A snooze ends automatically when the time is up and you're back on the roster. If you'd rather it never auto-resume, choose "Pause until I turn it back on" instead.

I'm a senior moderator. Does pausing also stop the confirmation/dispute work?

Yes. While you're paused, the senior review queue is hidden from you too, and the time-sensitive dispute push won't be sent to you. Other active senior moderators (and the admin fallback) cover that work in the meantime.

I'm a Moderation Admin / admin. Why don't I see a Pause button?

Moderation Admins and admins are the platform's safety net — if they paused, some work would have nowhere to go. The pause control is only for community and senior moderators.
