What each notification toggle means

A plain-English guide to every push notification category and toggle on the Push Notifications screen — including what Nearby Alerts are, where Events, Jobs and Meetings alerts live, and what the Moderation Duties toggle does.

The Push Notifications screen (Profile Settings → Push Notifications) groups your alerts into categories. Tap a category to open it into smaller groups, and open a group to reach the individual on/off switches. Some labels are short and not obvious, so this guide explains what each one actually controls.

A quick reminder first: every switch here only controls the push sent to your phone. Turning one off never stops the activity from appearing on your in-app notifications screen — it just stops the buzz. See How notifications reach you.

Which categories you see depends on your account type — a collector sees fewer than a practitioner, and studios see a studio-flavoured set. You won't have every category below.

  • Bookings

Everything to do with your appointments: requests being accepted or declined, price and time proposals, deposits asked for or confirmed, refunds, sessions completed or cancelled, and the reminders before a session. Clients, practitioners and studios each get the version that matches their side of a booking.

  • Messages

A new direct message. To stop one specific chat from buzzing without touching this switch, mute that conversation from your inbox instead.

  • Broadcasts

The project-broadcast system: a new request that matches you, an artist showing interest, being selected or passed over for a project, and a broadcast expiring or being cancelled.

  • Guest Spots

For tattoo artists and tattoo studios: a guest request received, accepted, declined, auto-declined for a clash, or cancelled by the artist.

  • News

This is the one with the confusing labels, so here's each group:

    • Nearby Alerts — "near you" notifications for new events, job offers, and guest artists in your area. This is what filters by your chosen location and radius (set those under the News tab — there's a Location & filter settings link at the bottom of the Push Notifications screen). So Nearby Alerts = "tell me when something new is happening close to me."
    • Subscriptions — updates from the specific artists and studios you've subscribed to: their new event, their new job offer, or their new guest spot. These reach you wherever they are, not just nearby.
    • Updates & Reminders — follow-ups on news you care about: an event was updated, an event or guest spot is coming up, or a job offer is about to expire.
  • Where are Events, Jobs and Meetings?

Events, job offers and guest artists all live under News (above) — there isn't a separate "Events" or "Jobs" category. Meetings are different: they live under Team (below), because a meeting is a studio-team event. So nothing is missing — they're just grouped by what they relate to rather than each having its own top-level switch.

  • Reviews

For practitioners: a new review received, a review being made public, an accountability review, or a review being updated by a meaningful amount.

  • Team

Studio-team activity: join requests and invites (and their accept/decline), a member leaving or being removed, and booking-licence changes. This category also holds Meetings — meeting invites, RSVPs, updates, cancellations, and the reminders before a meeting.

  • Post Validation

For posts that go through community checking: your post was approved, wasn't approved, or a review you were asked to give was escalated to someone else.

  • Trust & Safety

    Two groups:

    • Your Trust — things about your standing: a change to your trust level, a warning, a moderation suspension, or a dispute being resolved.
    • Moderation Duties — alerts about moderation work assigned to you (a report to review, a report resolved, a confirmation needed). This is push only — switching it off just silences the buzz; it does not remove you from moderation or turn the feature off. (A separate on/off switch for taking part in moderation at all is a planned addition, not part of this screen.)
  • Social & Community

    Three groups:

    • Post Engagement — likes (bundled to milestones per post) and comments (spaced out so a burst doesn't buzz repeatedly).
    • Connections — new followers and new subscribers.
    • Collaboration — tag requests, collaboration requests, and reposts of your posts.
  • Client Invites

For practitioners: a client invited you to book them, and a confirmation that your invite was seen.

  • App Announcements

Updates from InkMap itself: announcements, new-feature notes, and usage tips. These are off by default — turn them on if you'd like to hear about what's new.

Frequently asked questions

I turned a toggle off but I still see the activity in the app.

That's expected. These switches only control the push to your phone. The in-app row always appears — see How notifications reach you.

I'm a moderator. If I switch off Moderation Duties, do I stop getting work?

No. That switch only stops the push alerts. Reports can still be assigned to you and they still appear in the app — you've only silenced the buzz.

Where do I set which area "Nearby Alerts" uses?

In the News tab. Open the Location & filter settings link at the bottom of the Push Notifications screen to set the area, radius, and which types trigger them.
