How the Personal Story card works — three optional prompts to share who you were before the craft, the journey that got you here, and what drives you today. Purely your own words, and hidden until you fill it in.
Your Personal Story card is a place to tell people who you are beyond your portfolio and reviews — where you came from, how you got into the craft, and what keeps you going. It's completely optional and separate from your short bio: think of it as room for a genuine little essay rather than a one-liner. Every practitioner type has it, and it lives on the Info tab alongside your other cards.
It's built as three small prompts rather than one big blank box, because a blank "write your story" field is intimidating and usually stays empty — a few gentle questions are much easier to answer. All three parts are optional, and each holds up to roughly 250 words (about a paragraph or two). You can fill in one, two, or all three — whatever fits your story.
Before the craft
Who you were before this. Your background, what your life looked like before you started tattooing, piercing, or whichever craft you practise.
The journey
How you got to where you are — an apprenticeship, the struggles, travels, the turning points and milestones that shaped you.
Today & what drives you
Where you are now and what keeps you going: your philosophy, what you care about, what's next.
Only the parts you fill in show up. If you leave a section blank, it simply won't appear — and if the whole card is empty, it isn't shown on your profile at all.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this the same as my bio?
No. Your bio is the short line on your profile. The Personal Story card is a separate, much roomier space — up to about 750 words across three prompts — for the longer story behind your work.
- Do I have to fill in all three parts?
Not at all. Every section is optional. Fill in only the ones you want, and the empty ones stay hidden.
- How do people find my story?
It's deliberately low-key — there's no teaser line or banner added to your profile pushing it. People discover it by tapping into the card itself, so it rewards curiosity: reading one artist's story tends to make you want to read others'.
- Does InkMap check or filter what I write?
No. The story is free text — you write whatever you like, in your own language, exactly like your regular bio. It isn't pre-screened, so the tone is entirely yours. As with anything on the app, other users can report content that breaks the rules.
- I do laser removal / piercing — is a "story" really for me?
It's there for every practitioner type. Plenty of laser and piercing clients feel more at ease when they know a bit about the person working on them — and a career-change story (say, an ex-tattoo artist now doing removal) can be exactly the reassurance a nervous client needs.
